Fish & Chips in Norwich

The Grosvenor Fish Bar – 28 Lower Goat Lane, Norwich. (Norwich Lanes)

Just like one of the reviewers on Tripadvisor, we couldn’t understand how a chippy (no disrespect) was virtually continuously top of over 600 restaurants in Norwich on their ratings!

So last winter we went in. The appeal (for us) was instant, there is a rather cool and relaxed vibe about the place, even before you get through the door. If you are in a queue outside, usually there is a member of staff coming outside to take orders.

Once inside, music (not over the top), banter, happy people and always busy (that’s usually a good sign, right)? Your order is taken quickly and it’s noted if you want to takeaway or eat in.

We eat in and are gutted if we can’t. Downstairs, into a seriously cool ‘air raid shelter’ design of a restaurant. Your fish & chips (or whatever you have ordered) are brought down on a stainless steel platter with vinegar etc on the tables.

So, we are feeling great about the place and we haven’t even tasted the food yet…

Not quite sure what make some fish and chips better than others? But some really are ‘better’. We like our chipsĀ ‘dry’ not greasy or soggy, plentiful, fish not overly ‘fishy’ to the nose, thick and meaty and a good pot of curry sauce on the side for dunking. We haven’t had better in Norwich yet, in fact the only one that hits the spot quite as well for us is our local at home, Drifter’s in Fakenham (but that’s a whole different blog theme).

We return regularly and it’s reliably good. Atmosphere, staff, food, vibe, location all brilliant!
