We’ve now owned 106 The Malt House for two and a half years, and we are in ‘the honeymoon period’, because still we love it!
During a stroll into the city this evening, it strikes us that even on King Street, there is such diversity, the blending of ancient Norwich with the new. New riverside apartments, shops and cafe’s right next to old cottages and churches.
We start off hearing the hum of excitement resonating from NCFC on Carrow Road, Norwich have just drawn with West Ham, the buzz of hearing the fans is amazing, yet when the stadium empties everyone pours out quietly, Norwich attracts a huge family following, many many local people, Premier League or The Championship, they are always there.
Past Bicycle Links, the bike hire shop about 300 yards from 106, and we notice they are about ready to open a café, there is a coffee roasters just before and the Butterfly Café just after!
Dragon Hall is probably one of the most ancient buildings in Norwich, it now houses the Writer’s Centre – Norwich is England’s first City of Literature. St Julian’s Church is on the left, with it’s hermits room next door, see a previous blog about this place.
Moving further towards the city past 42 King Street, a popular local Tapas bar, now serving Sunday meals, there are more bars and restaurants at Tombland and Elm Hill, Prezzo, All Bar One, Aroma, both chains and local small businesses.
Another favourite street for us is Upper St Giles, this seems to be becoming a bit of a food destination road. Cup Cakes and Co have just opened their shop, go in and see Anne and her fab, freshly made cup cakes, tiffin and lots more. Roger Hickman has a restaurant here, Louis Deli, is perfect for breakfast, lunch and for picking up homemade ready meals, cheese, deli food.
On the way back we head across to Bethel Street, past the very inviting looking Coach & Horse’s pub, we’ve never been before, but it did look good. On the opposite side The Greenhouse a vegetarian café and bookshop, again, popular.
Walking past Norwich Theatre Royal and there is an afternoon show just finishing, crowds pouring onto the street, check out their website to see what’s on.
